Family Portrait
This pandemic has changed the world severely and constantly but the one thing that has remained same is family. I live in a big joint family of 10 people. The idea of living in a joint family is not something most people are familiar with, thus through my project, I choose to create the experience of living in a joint family. I wanted to capture the moments of us existing together at different times throughout the day. In doing so I started noticing patterns of when we all actually end up spending time together. Thus I choose to create a sort of family portrait through sound. My project showcases the different people at home, their personalities, and how they interact with each other in a space.

My main idea is to capture how everyone at home interacts with each other in a shared space. Being in a joint family can be invasive and loud but those are the things that brings everyone closer. I took multiple sound recordings through a period of a week. I focused on times when everyone was together, which ended up being breakfast, lunch and early evening times. I did not tell any of my family members I am recording them as I wanted to capture the raw feelings and conversations that come out of our time spent together. After creating a 15 minute soundscape, I assembled my family and captured their reactions to my recording. Seeing their reactions was even more interesting than the soundscape I was able to create. I asked them to speak their thoughts and emotions as they were listening to it. Thus, the setting of my family reacting to the soundscape of them that I had created became my sound installation. They became the props that created the sound for my soundscape and then added more to it when they reacted to it.
